Feminism
The reading for this week was Only Resist - a feminist approach to Critical Spatial Practice’ by Jane Rendell. In "Only Resist," Jane Rendell is talking about how the spaces we live in—like cities or buildings—affect and are influenced by gender, with a focus on feminist ideas. She explores how women deal with and push back against societal expectations in these different spaces. The main point is to encourage us to question and change the usual ways we organize and design spaces, aiming for fairness and inclusivity in our surroundings. She also mentiones that when we create places, it's vital to make sure everyone feels included and represented. According to this text, Materiality, Performativity, Performativity, Subjectivity and Collectivity are primary features that describe feminist approach to critical spatial practice. In this book, Materiality is examining the physical aspects of spaces, how materials and their arrangement contribute to gender dynamics. Performativity is investigating how gender identity is not just expressed but actively performed within spatial contexts, challenging traditional norms. Collectivity is exploring how groups of people, particularly women, come together and interact within spaces, emphasizing shared experiences and collective resistance and Subjectivity involves considering individual perspectives and experiences within spatial practices. Rendell looks at how personal viewpoints, influenced by gender and other factors, shape and are shaped by the spaces we inhabit. It highlights the importance of recognizing diverse subjectivities to create more inclusive and equitable environments.
After that, we were tasked to map the class with closed eyes which made me concentrate more on my feelings and pay attention to the sounds, smells and lights that I can feel with closed eyes. Moreover, I felt the space and catured it in a differet way, according to what I red in the passage. In my drawing, thicker lines which are horisantaly on the top indicates louder noisess and vertical lines shows light.
