Earth and Technology
For this week we had pages 1-14 'The Mangle in Practice,' from Andrew Pickering. In this book he introduces the concept of the "mangle" as a way to understand the complex interactions between humans and technology. Instead of viewing these relationships as predictable and linear, Pickering suggests that they are more like dynamic, evolving processes. He provides examples from scientific and technological practices to illustrate how both humans and machines shape and influence each other in unpredictable ways. The book explores how technologies emerge, evolve, and are continually transformed through interactions with human agents. This perspective challenges traditional views of technology as a passive tool and emphasizes the active, reciprocal relationship between people and the technologies they create and use. It provides a nuanced understanding of the intertwined nature of human actions and technological developments. From this text I realized that When we don't go along with how the Earth works, it causes problems like climate change. Our cities stop water from moving freely. If we live more in tune with nature, we won't need as much stuff to keep things livable. Trying to fix global warming makes us use a lot of electricity which is not sustainable for many reasons. We need to change how our society and big companies operate to participate in the preservation of the planet Earth. Moreover, there are always more details that can be added to the site plans.
We started first to do the closed-eye drawing practice and we did it two times. For each one, we did the deep observation from our perspective to the studio and then drew our drawing. I drew all that I had in my mind in that momment like some memmories from the past, noises from the street and the sound of breathing from my classmate!
For the second painting, I added more details to it and tried to draw more and more which led to the below result. Unconsciously, I drew a face with eye, nose and lips on my paper.
Our next activity was a group performance, we all designed our movements and drew them on paper and then after spending some minutes practising it, we performed it.
The score below is the map that I created for different kinds of movements that I did while picking up a chair in the studio.
