My second and also the last semester was different from the first one, we had a part of the book as a reading task for each session and most of that session was based on its content. most of them were written in academic language so reading and analysing them was not easy.  Different topics were discussed in our sessions but some of them were more interesting for me, for instance, 'The Mangle in Practice,' by Andrew Pickering which talks about the concept of the "mangle" as a way to understand the complex interactions between humans and technology. Instead of viewing these relationships as pr...

Life

Image
Were wen given some papers, oil pastels and rope to draw and create what we are thinking about and its meaning. I drew the painting below which includes and indicates different aspects of our lives. The cubic volumes show each level of ours live And with the passage of time, our experience increases and as a result, the size of the cubes becomes bigger the side that we mostly notice to it, has a darker colour on each level while at th same time, we have five other faces with lighter and brighter colours which mentions more positive energy.  If we turn my painting upside down, a shining diamond can be seen among the waves of the sea, which represents the ultimate goal of every human being in his life, and here the waves are the hardships of every stage of life, which sometimes decrease and sometimes increase.

Earth and Technology

For this week we had pages 1-14 'The Mangle in Practice,' from Andrew Pickering. In this book he introduces the concept of the "mangle" as a way to understand the complex interactions between humans and technology. Instead of viewing these relationships as predictable and linear, Pickering suggests that they are more like dynamic, evolving processes. He provides examples from scientific and technological practices to illustrate how both humans and machines shape and influence each other in unpredictable ways. The book explores how technologies emerge, evolve, and are continually transformed through interactions with human agents. This perspective challenges traditional views of technology as a passive tool and emphasizes the active, reciprocal relationship between people and the technologies they create and use. It provides a nuanced understanding of the intertwined nature of human actions and technological developments. From this text I realized that When we don'...

RSVP Cycles,

The text for this week was from Lawrence Halprins's 'The RSVP Cycles': Creative Processes in the Human Environment. Lawrence Halprin is known for his work in landscape architecture, and one of his influential books is “The RSVP Cycles: Creative Processes in the Human Environment.” This book explores his approach to designing and understanding public spaces, emphasizing participation and creativity. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/technology-obituaries/6782150/Lawrence-Halprin.html The RSVP Cycles are a framework for creative processes in the human environment.  1. Resources (R): This stage involves gathering information and understanding the context of the project. It includes researching the physical, social, cultural, and ecological aspects of the environment in which the design is intended. 2. Scores (S): Halprin uses the term “scores” to describe the various design possibilities or potential actions. These are like scripts or plans that guide the develop...

Space, Time and Everyday Life.

We had Pages 6-27 of Henri Lefebvre’s  Rhythmanalysis: Space, Time and Everyday Life as our reading task for week 7. In "Rhythmanalysis," Henri Lefebvre explores our daily routines, like chores and social activities, to uncover hidden patterns and meanings. He believes that by understanding these repeating rhythms, we can gain insights into how society works. Lefebvre also looks at how modern life, with its fast pace and technology, influences our sense of time and space. The book encourages us to think about how our daily habits and the world around us are connected in meaningful ways. After reading this text, I realized how closely we can examine issues. Rhythms exist everywhere in anything and manifest themselves in different ways. They are more comprehensive in STEM subjects as problem-solving methods and in human perspective. We tend to forget that rhythms have a natural aspect and focus more on the mechanical and man-made aspects. Money sets the rhythm for making things...

EPC Workshop, Back to Nature

Image
For this session, we bought a piece of furniture from a charity shop and turned it into a new object. Me, Maryam and Qazaal decided to buy an old wooden cupboard which was useless and bring it to the EPC workshop which had lots of challenges for us!  After we took the cupboard from the shop to the workshop, we started to take the pieces apart and we shared the wooden pieces between us.  Then I had to make a decision that what kind of object do I what to make out of this cupboard! I was looking for something practical and useful for people and also something which is related to the nature due to the originality of the cupboard. The cupboard was made of wood, glasse and the  metal screws, all these materials came from the nature, so I decided to make something that can be used near the trees, in nature. One of my challenges when I go picnic in the jungle or spend time in a local park on weekends, is to put my stuff (a cup of tea or my iPad) on a flat surface, so I thought t...
